Friends know how I feel about Husbands and Wives, Woody Allen's ode to bad marriages, Judy Davis perms, and Shakeycam. Nick Davis has written one of the best evaluations.
"Husbands and Wives" is not pleasant, no, but it's all the better for it. (If a divorce is pleasant, then it wasn't done right.) It's an honest film, it shows things that movies usually shrink from showing, (and people shrink from showing to OTHER people) but that happen to almost everyone. I think "H&W" was the last great movie he made, or is likely to make- (as opposed to "the last good Woody Allen movie"). I'm sure you can appreciate the distinction.
